Exhausts

What does a car exhaust system do?

Exhaust system is a very crucial part of the car system. It is responsible for removing the toxic burned gasoline fumes from the vehicle. The exhaust system comprises of several pipes, catalytic converters, mufflers, and a series of emissions devices.

Key components of car exhaust system

Muffler

The muffler takes care of the noise created by the engine when your car is running. It reduces the noise but if you can hear to the engine clearly, it means there is something wrong with the muffler.

Exhaust Manifold and heat riser

The exhaust manifold make way for the burned gases to exit the exhaust system. Heat riser is responsible for closing the exhaust when you start the car, allowing time to the engine to heat up. Heat riser is also known as heat control valve.

Resonator

It is also a type of muffler that intensifies the job of a muffler and reduces the noise from the engine.

Exhaust Pipes

These pipes are responsible to carry gasses to other parts of the exhaust system.

Tail pipe

Tail pipe is the extreme end of the exhaust system from where the exhaust leaves the vehicle. It is one of the hottest part of the system. There can also be dripping water from the tail pipe but there is nothing to worry about as the water is the result of natural condensation process.

Catalytic converter

Catalytic converter converts the harmful pollutants in the exhaust to harmless gases. Genuine catalytic converter is good to use for up to 50,000 miles and is a legal obligation to maintain the catalytic converter in the vehicle.

Brackets and hangers

Brackets and hangers keep all the parts of the exhaust system and its components suspended from the bottom of the car. The brackets and hangers are very flexible as they are made to respond to the car’s movement to avoid damage and breakage. If you can hear scraping sounds as you drive the vehicle, you must know that there is some problem with the brackets and hangers of the exhaust system.

What can be the problem with your exhaust system?

Rust is the biggest enemy of exhaust systems. Exhaust system malfunction is majorly because of rust but small holes and road damage can also contribute to it. However, there are certain not very common problems including pinholes, stuck valves, loose brackets, and malfunction in the catalytic converter or other emission devices. These problems are tough to identify hence professional services are required.
